Italy deregulated radio earlier and more completely than most of Europe, and it shows: the country has thousands of stations, many of them small, regional and family-run for decades. Italian commercial radio also leans unusually hard on live personality shows, so daytime listening is closer to conversation with music than to a formatted playlist.
What to expect
For music, the reliable threads are Italian pop and cantautori, Europop and dance — Italy effectively invented the Italo disco sound and never entirely let go of it — plus a serious classical presence built around the opera houses.
Italian station names often include the city or province, which makes searching by place name an effective way to find local radio.
