France radio online
France protects its radio culture by law: a long-standing quota requires music stations to give a substantial share of airtime to French-language songs. The practical effect for a listener abroad is that French radio actually sounds French, rather than playing the same international chart as everywhere else.
What to expect
Beyond chanson, France has an exceptional public music network — one channel devoted to classical and jazz with its own orchestras, another to eclectic curated music that switches from Malian guitar to minimal techno without apology. The associative sector, a third category of non-profit local stations that exists specifically outside both public and commercial radio, adds several hundred more.
Stations from Belgium, Switzerland, Quebec and West Africa broadcast in French too — search by name if you want the wider francophone dial.
